Flora Mackenzie
Project type
Illustration
Flora Mackenzie was a well-known brothel owner from the 1960s and 70s: a misunderstood, alcoholic, hard-talking feminist woman who won the affection of many influential individuals.
Flora came across as intimidating, loud, and controlling of the girls who worked for her. To emphasize this, I have placed Flora on a couch to symbolize a ‘throne,’ with the girl’s bodies behind her and their heads cut out of the image. The money made from the girl’s bodies allowed Flora to feed her bad habits and purchase expensive items that we can see carelessly placed around her. Furthermore, their sexual stance objectifies them, transferring all the power to Flora. I also wanted to highlight Flora’s alcoholism as I felt it was essential to her character. Her alcoholism has also been emphasized through her face: her eyes are sad and glazed over with a drunk appearance. Flora was a brothel owner in the 1970s. I have used a 1970s colour palette, clothing style, couch, and wallpaper to ensure the specific period was evident in the illustration.
